I thought those on here might be interested in then results for the Minis 'under the hammer' today:

1994 Rover Mini Sprite, 64k miles, nice overall standard condition:                              £2100

1988 'Mary Quant Designer 998, 12450 miles, very clean and looking like new:          £6000

1979 Clubman, 60000 miles, Quite nice and very original:                                            £3800

1967 Morris Cooper 'S' Mk.1. Needing some restoration inc. new sills                         £13500

1965 Austin Countryman 850 'Woodie' Beautiful restoration to completely standard    £10400 (worth a lot more I thought)

1990 Mini Mayfair 1293. heavily modified and to me very 'chav'                                   £6900  (very over-priced I think)

1968 Morris Mini 998 Mk.2. Completely standard and immaculate                                £6600

1965 Cooper 'S', a very accurate 1965 Monte Carlo replica, in superb condition          £32500 bid, not accepted by vendor

1960 Morris Mini Mk.1 850, absolutely superb and very original                                   £8300

5% buyers premium should be added to the final bid prices.

The 'works replica' was being sold by a friend and we discussed whether this was thenbest auction for this car. I'm sure it would make a lot more at Silverstone or Goodwood as the bidders would appreciate the accuracy of the restoration and the relevance of the number, AJB4B (the '65 Monte winner was AJB44B). A figure of £45000 would be more appropriate IMHO.

There were a lot of non-Mini bargains, like the immaculate 1993 4.0 Jag XJS which sold at £3700 + 5%. That's a lot of beautiful car for very little money. Other good deals were a 1975 BMW 2002 which went for only £5400, a very clean 1989 BMW 316i with 105000 miles on for £700 + 5%, an absolutely superb VW1303 Beetle for £2750 and a 1981 Daimler Sovereign VDP with a warranted 48,900 miles and in unmarked condition for only £2100 + 5%. What great classics they are and all very useable.

The actor Philip Glenister was there and he drove the Audi Quattro in which went for a reasonable price.

I hope these are interesting to you all.

Very interesting indeed! Strange how auctions always throw a few surprises in. Those woodies are gorgeous and I would love one, I have been looking over the last couple of months but even rough projects are over my budget.

I don't agree. I did some work on that car and it really is a true replica of AJB44B. It is not a 'replica' in the sense that it looks like a 'works' car, it is an absolute replica of the Monte Carlo Rally winner of 1965. It is correct down to the strange wheel arch extensions, the matt black painted rocker cover, the lamp covers, even the crew names on the wings.

When I helped to build the engine, the engine spec was exactly as the original build sheet, the doors are aluminium and the aluminium boot lid was hand crafted to be exactly as the one fitted to AJB44B for that Monte.

It is a superb car and IMHO it is well worth £45000, especially when you see what 'allegedly genuine' works cars fetch.

It is basically a log book away from being a genuine works car.  :P

The Countryman looks very tidy, I'm surprised it didn't make it to £14k.

I fully expected the 'Woodie' to make around £14k at the minimum. I think it was bought by a dealer so expect it to be up for c.£16,500 next week.

A beautiful Austin A40 Farina, which was absolutely perfect made over £9000 from a high estimate of £5500. It looked faultless though.

What surprised me was how cheaply the really good condition E30 BMW's were going for. They are still ideal daily drivers and at those prices I would choose one over a Mini as a road car.

I'm not sure, we went for a 'cuppa' and a pork roll whilst that was 'on the block'. I think it made around £8000. It needed a bit of work.

When I see what we spend on our Minis to make them not quite so slow and as marginally comfortable for road use as we can, maybe we would all do better buying some other classics.

I mean, we regularly get people asking how to modify a 998 or 1275 to make them 'fast road', when in reality we mean 'not quite so slow road'. Then we spend a few thousand getting a few more bhp, replacing the rust and re-painting. Then I look at that XJS 4.0 which will do 0 - 60 in around 8 seconds, have a top speed of c.145 mph, cruise all day at 70 to 80 and still give around 26 mpg, which is good by classic car standards.

Still, the Mini is arguably the ultimate classic in the UK and that is why they fetch such good prices, especially when in original form.

WOW

I've got a mate who had one about 15 years ago. He used to put hay in the back of it to feed his horses. He drove it into the ground :(

My Mini's going up for auction tomorrow. Clicky

Fortunately it's towards the end of the auction so I 'probably' wont bring anything else back. I did see a mint Daimler XJ40 at a local auction that didn't sell at £1500 a couple weeks ago, it was very tempting/

AJB 4B was a nicely done car and had a lot of time put into it, you would have a job to build it for that !

The blue S wasn't in its original shell and I believe the plate was also repo and needed more that sill's both quarters rear panel and A panels we all know how bad they are when you start :ohno:

The BMW 2002 sounded like a bargain. Would love one of them in my garage. Was it in good condition?
