First registered as EBL56C on April 1st 1965 (as detailed in the accompanying buff log-book), the above chassis was prepared in the Competitions department by engineer Mick Legge for the 1965 Alpine Rally, driven by Paddy Hopkirk and Henry Liddon, subsequently winning a Coupe D'Or (Gold cup) for three non-consecutive clean (no penalty) events -

Competition history:

1965 Alpine Rally Paddy Hopkirk/Henry Liddon, 4th overall, 2nd Class

1965 1000 Lakes Paddy Hopkirk/Henry Liddon, 6th overall

1965 RAC Rally Paddy Hopkirk/Henry Liddon, 13th overall, 2nd class

1966 Geneva Rally Tony Fall/Henry Liddon, 2nd overall

1966 Czech Rally S.Zasada/Z.Leszczuk, 4th overall, 1st class

1966 Danube Rally

1966 RAC Rally Marjetta Aaltonen/Carolyn Tyler to 37th overall

1967 Sold to British Vita Racing

1967 Televised Rallycross - Paddy Hopkirk

With many ex-works BMC Mini Cooper’s in single or long-term ownership, this is a very rare opportunity to acquire a much cherished competition example, with complete provenance - of one of the most iconic cars of the twentieth century. £150,000

Well if I wondered what the price of a works car was.....now I know :-)  is the car original or is it like Trigger's broom?

Beautiful.

Fantastic, i would love it as it is a piece of genuine rally nostalgia, a lottery win would make life easier for the purchase but, i would probably park it in my lounge for a while and drool over it ...................

I am not doubting the value here in this car, but I think I would be happy with  a very good original cooper S for 1/5th of the price of this beauty, together with some other goodies if I had 150 kliks free to spend on cars.

Looking at it from a realistic perspective, this is a fantastic piece of motoring history. It's not just a 'Mini thing' it's part of the UK's engineering heritage and whoever buys it will be doing so for that reason probably.

Now, what would you rather have, this Mini or, say, a standard 1973 Porsche 2.7 Carrera RS at a price of around £200,000? Both are ultimate classic cars, but the Mini is less expensive (I was going to say 'cheaper', but I don't think that's the right word).

I just wonder if it has been over-restored and is not like the rally cars which took part in those epic rallies of the '60's. In fact I think my 1964 rally 'S' is more representative of those events, despite having a full roll-cage to meet current historic rules. It should have minor 'battle scars', some dents in the floor and a bit of dirt in the engine bay - it's called 'patina'.

Did they not have roll cages in the 60s?

Roll cages were not mandatory for competition in the '60's. The basic rudimentary ones started to appear mid-'60's, but they were often just a roll hoop with a rear stay. I recall doing the Scottish International Rally in 1969 in a Lotus-Cortina and the only roll protection was a single hoop fixed to the floor and the B-post seat belt mounting points (we rolled it, but that's another story!).

On the Minis of the era the roll protection was often a single hoop with a rear stay going to the centre of the rear shelf, despite the rear shelf being relatively weak.

Safety in motor sport really was in its infancy, although those of us actively competing didn't really think too much about it.

So a classic car competing now in historic events really does look a bit different from the cars of the era represented as they now have big-diameter-tube roll cages, full fire extinguishers, FIA high-back seats, FIA full harness belts, fire-proofed front bulkheads, battery master cut-off switches, etc.
