Hi,

So, today i've been trying to tackle some of the surface rust around my mini. there was some rust underneath the windscreen on the scuttle which i though was surface, however after further investigation turns out to be more. (See  picture)

How can this be fixed, the hole is now bigger (about twice the size, or about a 2pence peice.) The rest of the scuttle appears okay.

I know a few welders, would buying a new scuttle, cutting out the portion needed and welding it on be the best way?

Thanks

Windscreen out, cut out the rust metal, make a new peice to fit in rather than buying a scuttle (or find someone removing ther scuttle that can cut out that part for you) then weld in the new bit.

as said wouldn't bother buying a complete scuttle unless there is other rust so I would check the corners but more time you spend make the new peice of panel in shape then less filler

Before you buy anything have a very good look up under the scuttle. That rust will be the tip of the iceberg.

The Mini special i am restoring at the moment had scuttles that looked like this

but underneath was this

Now if left it would have come through very quickly and made a large mess. This actually is not that bad to be honest but you can see under the scuttle all of the rust forming.

Thanks for the replys..
The rest of the panel looks good with only little sections of bubbling, and the corners are sound too! It's just this hole in the middle.
I will try to investigate tomorrow.

Thanks!

It is possible for the rest of the surrounding metal and underside of the scuttle to still be sound.

I had this rust/hole in the middle of the scuttle for a number of years temporally 'fixed' with filler

And after I repaired it properly just before Christmas.
