Currently on a job in Camden, doing a refurbishment.
Have taken down some ceiling tiles and dont know whether they would contain asbestos.
They are a grey colour as a material.
Can anyone shee any light?
Many thanks

well our roof is made of them......

that's all I know..
I remember when someone head butted a wall in science and made a hole revealing asbestos and we were all evacuated and got a few days off :)

Can't always identify asbestos by eye, needs to be checked properly by someone.

Don't go breaking it up though, as it probably is asbestos, especially being Camden haha

As said its hard to tell but was used for everything so very possible. It will however if present be a small amount and the white asbestos probably (lesser of the evils but still very nasty), you will only have trouble if you start smashing it up if you leave the tiles intact and wear a mask then there is a lot less risk.

If you do or have broke any covering with water keeps the particles down and a bit safer, still best/recommended to get a firm in if you can stretch to it. Phone the local tip in advance and most can take it off you

If your not sure what your doing stay away

Looks like normal suspended ceiling tiles to me.

I work in schools doing network cabling and projectors and they pretty much all have them tiles. As Ross said though its hard to tell from a photo.

Are the tiles like a grey fluff/furry material?

It was being installed up to about 1999 so if they are known to be newer than this they are ok

I think it's unlikely, but it's always a good idea to wear a dust mask. Call your local environmental health for advice, if it's a commercial property there should be a register if it's known there is asbestos about.

Thanks for the quick replies guys!
Its a grey colour, hard to describe, more of an insulation type of material but rather dense.
Another pic of a broken one
It has a groove design on the edges, with a metal biscuit to keep them level.

I did an asbestos awareness course about a month ago and this looks nothing like the photos. But there are loads of different types so it could be.

Remember: mask first, mask last! :P

It actually looks quite similar to this, and this is asbestos

I don't think they are asbestos they look to be just normal ceiling tiles. Perforated acoustic tiles normally contain the stuff. Have they got a manufacturers name on sometimes you can identify it this way. The best course of action is to always assume it is in them and tread carefully and dispose of them appropriately.

Very sound advice there, better safe than sorry. I think they look like standard ceiling tiles but why take the risk?

Yeah this^^^^^

You just don't know, it was seen as a wonder material of its time with endless uses, it was just mixed in to all sorts of concrete and castings etc, just don't smash it

also if you do disturb it, wet it down to keep the dust down.
