Hello was wondering if any of you out there have ever made your own dashboards?? I have found templates on eBay and am considering a go for the sake of a bit of MDF. Thoughts on this please :) and any pictures or advice is always welcome :)
Thanks Kelly x

I,ve yet to complete it though haha

I think making your own stuff for the mini gives it more character and gives ya that unique edge to brag about at shows ;D

It's like a plane cockpit haha I will settle for nice and simple lol thanks for the links they are great and I think I'm gonna have a go :) would it literally just be MDF I would need to make it all out of then just cover it?? I know it's a really dumb question but if you don't ask you don't know haha x

Not going to lie I think that dash looks a bit of a mess. I much prefer the first picture shown of a nice wooden one showing some nice grain and keeping everything in order and methodical as opposed to what seems to be sporadically placed dials, but of course this is just my view.

Errm, i think its laminated chipboard to be honest but not to sure, problem with chipboard is if it gets wet it'l swell up and render the dash useless

MDF is popular for homemade dashes, sub boxes, bootliners ect.. but i think its too thick for whats needed, yes MDF does need to be about 10-18mm for strenth but if you're covering it id get some perspex sheet and make it out of that, upsides to perspex is its waterproof and need no sanding of dust residue being left over (wear goggles when cutting holes in it though SAFETY FIRST :proud: )

If you want the luuuvvly wood effect of the dash i first posted then get yourself down to B&Q and ask what finishes of laminate they have, buy the one you fancy and get some bonding glue and stick it to the perspex (Jobs a gooden ;D )

EDITED: My terrible spelling errors haha

I use 16 swg (1.5 mm) Aluminium Alloy sheet and M5 Rivnuts with socket head cap screws to bolt it to the upper & lower rails. That's on a Mk.1. On a Mk.2 with the padded dash rails you need to make up support brackets. I would post a photo, but Photobucket seems to not work as it used to.

I'd imagine it's a DIY jobby, most of the ones like that are :P. I quite like it too although I wouldn't have it myself!
