Hi guys,

I've tried searching everywhere but I can't find what I'm looking for.

Does anyone have a picture of a 1982 VIN plate, or one that would have been fitted during that time? If not, are there any places that will be able to supply me with one?

My other question is, is it legal to use the Morris Motors chassis plate if I was to stamp my VIN number onto it? Link

Thanks for the help.

I don't believe that it would be legal no.  I think the plate is required to have the correct manufacturer for the time on it.  It's also supposed to have the upper number on the plate filled in which is the type approval, but you never get that on reproduction plates anyway.  It could be quite foolish to fit the wrong one though because no matter how much you might be trying to make it look like an older model, it simply isn't one.  If you choose to sell it then it would cause issues.  I for one would be suspicious of a car with the wrong VIN plate.

First response from Google Images when asked for 'Austin Rover Mini VIN plate':

I think it's Mini Mail that will sell you the correct plate and properly reverse stamp it with your VIN if you can provide proof that the number is yours.

Thanks for that Dan. I was wondering if I could use the Morris Motors one because it looks better. if it's illegal, I won't bother.

Thanks for the Google images search term. I've been searching for all the wrong terms!

Another question, would it be legal to buy one of the Austin Rover plates and punch it myself? Or do I need to take it to get it made?

Thanks

What if I was to use a plate like this? As it says 'Austin Morris Mini City' on the logbook.

Or this, as it is technically made by British Leyland

It'll never look right if you punch it yourself.  For one thing you'd need a set of reverse stamps.  Mini Mail don't charge a lot for the service and it comes back looking very good.

Your car would I think be right on the border of being a 'BL Cars Ltd' or an 'Austin Rover' (just BL under a more customer friendly name really).  It's registered wrong, as hundreds are due to the millions of times the company re-branded itself at the end of the '70s and into the '80s.  'Austin Morris' was the main car manufacturing part of BL from '77 to '79 only.
