What Mk Is My New Mini? Please Help :)

Hi there, I've put a deposit down on this Mini but because its imported from Malta it doesnt have the original UK reg doccuments to say which year the car is. Obviously i could check by the numbers on the car but its 300 miles away at the moment up in blackpool.

Whats weird for me is that its apparently a 1969 MK2. Now its got no sliding windows or wide door pockets and its got a boot like ud find on any of the later minis. Its also not got the 'pull down' door handles.

What it does have though is mk2 lights and external body hinges

The thing ive got is that ive seen 69 MK2's before and they have sliding windows,wide door pockets and the 'pull down' door handles.

Is it just the fact that its a late 69 or maybe someones coverted their later mini.

I'ts more than likely the first option but i just thought i'd check

Mk2 & early Mk3 rear lights are the same.....Mk4 and Innocenti had built in reverse lights but same body apertures for rear lights as Mk2.
You have an interesting hybrid......Mk2 fitted with Mk3 doors (not an easy job) or Mk3 bodyshell (if side windows are taller - hard to see in photos) fitted with Mk1/2 external hinges and A panels. The Mk3 doors with winding windows have been modified to have the rounded front bottom corner to match the Mk1/2 A panel shape and if shell was Mk2 the Mk3 door/window frames would not fit without major mods. Standard Mk3 onwards doors have a square front corner. This Mk1/2 lookalike door modification is quite common in Japan on later retro style Mini's.

It looks like a Mk2 shell to me. You can make out the extra bodywork below the gutter. Also there's no eye ball vent holes in the fire wall and toggle switches on the switch panel. The doors look like Mk3 from the inside so some how they must have grafted the Mk2 window frame on, rounded the leading door edge and then mounted it onto the external hinges. Also note the Mk3 external door handles.

It is a Mk 2 shell and a November 1968 one at the latest judging by the wiper motor mounting.

Could it be an Australian Mk.2. These had all the Mk.2 features but had wind-up windows with quarter-lights.

Australian cars had quarterlights in the doors and still had door pockets on the inside and a different style of door handle.

Can you get a picture of the lock mechanism and the door aperture.


If that's a custom job someones done a very nice job of it.

to be honest looks to me an MK2 where someone replaced rotten doors and boot with later items adapted to fit.

The size of the numberplate aperture should tell the experts a lot (it's huge).
Who knows if that's original or not because the boot looks bashed and dented from the picture.

Also it looks like it's riding "high" which makes me think that the tens it's on are either not original
or something has gone on with the suspension.

Sunroof, roof mounted arial and seatbelts.

MK 1 style hinges but MK 2 handles.
MK 3 boot handle.

Opening rear windows by what I can see in the pics.

Looks like a fully mixed up kid - but a nice Mini.

I'll give you fifty quid for it ;D

the bottom of the door indicates an earlyt shell though right?

As said more close up photos are really required of the key areas to confirm but looks an interesting hybrid!

Hi there, I'm from Malta and have been to see this Mini when it was for sale. It is indeed a 1969 mk2, with hydrolastic suspension, but the doors have been changed and modified so that they can be fitted to a mk2 shell (basically the door frames were shortened around the windows). I think the side panel may have also been modified to accept the later style door. I've seen a couple of minis with mk3 doors fitted on early shells, it was a common conversion here in Malta!

What confusion? It is quite clearly stated above re the wiper motor mounting.
