hey all, i went to an auction today in mid somerset, the main reason was to see a mk1 that was listed, it was bought and owned by one guy who has recently passed away,

i've taken some photgraphs and included the auction listing

that car sold for 16k there was a 10% buyers premium and then vat on that total so the buyer ended up paying £21,120..!! a lot of money but it was a truly original cooper, and it smelt beautiful inside.

heres the photos

The VAT is only payable on the buyers commission, not the hammer price, so the final sale price including premium was £17,920. It's still a hefty price for a 998 Cooper though.

Thanks for sharing the info and posting the pictures.

It would appear that all it needs is the engine bay tidying up to make it a very clean car. With the history, its low mileage and one-owner from new it is worth that.
Just whip the engine out, check it all, paint the block original BMC Green and the radiator black, etc, and it will be fantastic.

it really was a well preserved example and i guess you can't put an actual price on that it'll just come down to how much the bidders want to own it.

one thing we were debating yesterday was, would you start taking it apart and repainting things, or would you just preserve it as it is in it's full untouched honesty, for me the second is more appealing

I’ve said that for two reasons, firstly i wouldn't drive it either way weather it was polished up or not and secondly if you start rebuilding the engine then the low original mileage become irrelevant. how cool would it be to have a mk1 cooper thats completly original from the factory.

what would you guys do?

i was seeing it more as an investment, i recon you'd get more interest on your money from this than you would get from any bank at the moment

Personally I think these cars should be used (if only every now and then), and the beauty of this one is that you would get the benefit of driving a Cooper in a nearly new state with all the smells and sensations of an original car rather than one that has been restored to a similar standard.
