My dad came back from the Malvern show with a front spot light and front fog light.
From a 60's/70's vintage, im unsure where to mount them on the front bumper.

Does anyone have any photos of such classic lights mounted on minis/similar classic car? Maybe a VW camper or something?

Thinking of mounting them next to each other, on the passenger side of the front bumper.

Found this with a front spotlight one.
Not a mini and not a great deal of help.

Mount them on the wings, like they used to with all old cars. Then the passenger would direct its beam

You should sell them to me :shifty:

Maybe you don't want to buy another hood, but I always thought George Harrisons mini looked cool with spots in the hood. Kinda like how rally porsches mount theirs.

In period, they would have been mounted on the bumper - or overriders - with the foglight on the nearside!

So the opposite way round from your first photo. :-)

how would these have been wired up?
the fog on a switch and the spot connected to main beams?

They could have been, or wired together on one switch - or wired on two separate switches to look even flashier on the dashboard!

It's not totally legal these days to have one or other auxiliary light illuminating on its own. ;D

So if im right, I can't mount these drilled straight through the bumper as it will just flex and bend? So they either have to go through the lip that the bumper is mounted to or a spot light bar? (or though the bonnet/wings ;) )

It would be advisable to mount your spots on a purpose made bracket, but to be legal you should have two of the same type spots and wire them through a separate switch and relay ie: spotlights on a switch via a relay connected to your main beam wire. A pair of fogs should be wired to a switch via a relay. I have wired mine up like this and it works well.

So is it not legal for me to wire these up separately? I.e The yellow fog on a totally seperate switch to the rear fog and the front spot light not wired in with the main beams?

I may have not explained the mounting and wiring details clearly, but my next door neighbour is a retired motorway patrol officer and he advised me of the relevant laws regarding auxilliary lights on motor vehicles as far as he remembers.

1/ You must be able to switch the spotlights independently from your main beam.

2/ " " " " " " " foglights " " " " " and rear foglight/s.

3/ Any rear foglights must be mounted to the drivers side of the vehicle and independently switched.

4/ Rear foglights are not a legal requirement on cars manufactured before a certain age,ie if it did not have one fitted from the manufacturer then you do not have to install one.

The date is 1 April 1980.

Spots should go off when you dip the headlights - using the same switch. Easily done, just use a relay operated from the main beam, via your spotlight switch.

I'm pretty sure a single front fog should be mounted on the driver's side. There are rules about how far it should be from the vehicle edge, they'll be on the web.

They are: Regulation 20, schedule 6 of The Road Vehicles Lighting Regulations 1989

In short, if you only have 1 fog you can put it anywhere but you must also use dipped beam. If you have a pair you can use them in place of the headlights, but they must be within 40cm of the vehicle edge and within 120cm of the ground, not a huge restriction on a Mini :P
