The old shed at the bottom of the garden, to be replaced with something a little more useable.
Making room.
Ordered a shed load of pressure treated timber. Floor and walls are 4”x2”, roof is built from 6”x2”.
Frame starts to go up for a wood structure 7m x 4m x 2.5m with a very shallow pitched roof and a porch at the front. Walls were built on the ground and then lifted into place. The whole thing rests on three rows of bricks which in turn sit on three rows of paving stones. This gives a reasonable height under the floor for the air to circulate.
Front and one side to be clad in cedar.
Front of the shed has an overhang. Green posts are temporary supports as the porch is self supporting. Roof has a very shallow pitch to keep the highest point below 2.5m. Wife working well at this point.
Brother helps while the dog has a nap.
Front roof was designed for 2 tons of concrete roof tiles, hence the large quantity of 6x2 timber.
Green sheet on the grass is plastic coated steel cladding. This is for the right hand side, the rear side and the rear roof section. It’s one of the cheapest forms of covering and doesn’t require much maintenance.
First steel sheet on the rear roof.
Two walls clad, dog still resting.
Front roof design changed from tiles to cedar cladding. The cedar is probably around one tenth of the weight of the original clay tiles which means the roof is now grossly over engineered, but I guess its better this way around rather than under engineered. Wife very happy that the roof is on.
Cladding being fitted to one of the side walls. This wall is visible from my neighbours garden and we wanted it to look nice and blend in with their garden buildings. Coincidently, he supplied us with the cladding.
Trial fit of the double glazed windows. These were being thrown out by some friends who were having an extension.
Window and door surrounds fitted. These were cut from a thick cedar plank and match the vertical end trim on each corner. Cladding is fitted between the vertical trims to give a more finished appearance.
Fully clad and watertight.
Windows toned down with a little paint. Wood stacked under the windows are pressure treaded scaffold boards for the floor.
Fitting the floor. Much cheaper and twice the thickness of the 18mm ply I had originally considered.
Walls and roof are insulated with 2” polystyrene sheets.
Polystyrene insulation finished, skylights will be double glazed with conservatory roofing polycarbonate sheets.
Double doors. Main door is wide enough to get bikes through without twisting the handlebars. Small second door might be needed for really large items. Electrics temporarily transferred from original shed.
Interior is lined with 12mm ply.
Outside nearly finished, only needing a gutter and some plants growing against it.

Did you design all that yourself?

Lovely, as above, did you design it yourself? Really jealous of all that space.

It's just a shame there's no vehicular access to the garden. If there was, the shed would have been much bigger.
Maybe your next project can be ''underground access tunnel''

Beautiful red cedar. Is it Canadian?
Are you sure the dog's just asleep?

Now you could really have something there!Maybe your next project can be ''underground access tunnel''
What are you doing on here? Please don't give him any ideas! underground is about the only part left that he can do anything to! ps v.proud of mini - love driving it.
No, just good old Surrey cedar. Apparently it was lying in someone's field for a year before my neighbour acquired it and ran it through the saw mill. It'll turn grey in a year which is a little saddening as the colour at the moment is really something else when the sun rise catches it.Beautiful red cedar. Is it Canadian?
Difficult to tell sometimes. Are you sure the dog's just asleep?
