Discuss a porous paint with poor adhesion thats fifty years out of date?

Why not start by saying what you love about it?

poor adhesion??? ive never had such troubles???? saying that I only use the brush on type...

i like it because its the closest thing to red lead ive found since it was taken off the shelfs...

what would you suggest as an alternative???

If it's that bad why do we and every other steel fabricators use gallons of it every week painting structural steel work and using it as a base coat for asthetical railings etc.

And poor adhesion?- please show us how to get it off of anything it touches?!

Well, you seem to have painted the entire shell with it, but somehow missed the pair of ramps underneath!?

LOL, I think youre missing my point about the OP's love affair.

I agree that it still has a place in high volume low cost applications but have a look at modern acid etch primers that are far more effective and have been widely available for DIY use for quite some time.

I've used both spray (aerosol) and brush on red oxide. The aerosol was rubbish as it was far too thin! But the red oxide I've brushed on has been excellent.

I have found the zinc primer better as it is not as thin as red oxide i think.
And i think it protects the metal more.

It's almost like treacle in the can! And it contains zinc anyway, buy it neat, then you can brush it on thick or thin it to spray however you like!

ive been using the paint on red oxide and its great ;D if it was possible though i would be using marine paint as a primer cus its way better than anything else ive used before and you dont see many steel boats rusting away after a couple of years in the sea

It's only a colour, there hasn't been proper red (lead) oxide paint about for donkey's years.

just remember it's a primer and porous don't leave your car out in the rain with just a primer coat on it

What do you think your mini is, the Forth Bridge?

But looking at the surface under the paint on your mini, I would think brushed red oxide primer will make little difference to the finished car.

its by no means the final primer coat... its simply there to protect my work whilst im doing it...
