Has anybody fitted the later MPI type inertia reel rear seatbelts, to an earlier model with the standard fixed rear belts? I know that the inertia reels are fitted inside the rear bins somewhere, but what extra parts would be needed other than the belts themselves and what sort of reinforcement would be needed to the inertia reel anchor point?

Any advice or guidance would be appreciated  ?

Cheers

Brother in laws 1970 mini came with no rear seat belts. His written off 1990 had inertias in the rear so we've used those.

This is how we did ours

The reel we fitted onto the rear parcel shelf as far into the corners as we could get them. Used spreader plates underneath
The other end of the main belt we bolted to the rear bin with a spreader plate below the height of the seat base and as far back as poss.
The slot bit the belt plugs into bolts through the seat back behind the lower cushion in the middle again spreader plates used.

You may have to adjust the inertia reel, they are designed to work in a certain orentation, there are markings on them to show which way and how to adjust.

Thanks for that, I think I'd preffer to have the reels tucked away in the bins out of the way, as opposed to on the parcel shelf though.

I got a set of inertia reel ones that replace the static ones and fix in the same three anchor points (on the c pillar and underneath the seats). Probably not what you're after if you want a clear parcel shelf but they are as safe as they can be and don't involve creating new anchor points. Here's a pic.

Yes that would give me an idea of where they are supposed to be mounted :)

Remember, Mpi rear belts are 4 point, where as the before the inertia belts with 3 point, and mount to the same positions already in the car if static factory belts are fitted. I had a blonde moment last year, and bought mpi spec rear belts lol :)

Luckily I got the from Minisport, who let me exchange them for the 3 point ones, even though it was 6 months later! :w00t:

I dont imagine that would work very well, the reels are designed to be mounted at the correct angle so they work properly.

They are designed to replace the static belts and work fine - if they didn't they wouldn't meet the required safety standards and couldn't be used. They are adjustable to work at almost any angle.

I think people are talking about using the MPi ones in that fashion, not buying special replacements...
