hi,
im sorry if this has been posted loads of times before but come on i've just spent about 45 minutes searching on here for the answer!
ive got a mini city e 998 1981
there are hundreds of wires everywhere, all i would like to know is what wires i need to link up to get the fuel gauge to work.
im a massive newbie when it comes to wiring! so the clearest description would be brilliant. eg colour where it should be found many thanks callum
ps. i know i could take it too the local classic mini specialist but wheres the fun in that? im 18 and want to learn so please keep your comments to yourself about how you shouldn't do work yourselves.

The fuel gauge (34) in the schematic has two wires.
The light green is the supply (+) voltage to the gauge and it comes from the voltage regulator (64) which gives out a steady 10V.
The other connection on the gauge (green with a black tracer) runs to the fuel sender in the tank (35).
The sender is a variable potentiometer and the resistance changes with fuel level change.
The sender has two connections, the second connection (black) goes to ground (black arrow head).

That diagram is only accurate up to about 1976, but the fuel gauge wiring is still correct
If you're not sure which contact is which on the tank the earth is the uninsulated terminal.

The terminals at the tank end are two different sizes.
