I have seen a few code readers on ebay at a good price, but they all say for 2001 onwards cars, and the ebay members confirm that they won't work.

What code reader will work on a 1997 MPI? I am talking £20 ish code readers, not 100's!!

I am not sure a £20 ish code reader will work on a Rover Mini.

I have used a Sykes-Pickavant ACR2 and ACR4 Rover Pod 3 on the MPi Mini. You also need the correct cable.
The pieces added up to more than £20.

I posted this quite a while ago:
Here is the info for SP ACR
Part Number:Product Name Price
30055400: ACR4 Code Reader £435.56
30214000: Rover 16 Pin Harness Mpi £75.00
30350800: Rover Pod £92.99
30211600: Rover Harness Spi £55.42

Prices are new prices, but I am not sure you can buy these new any longer. I would think the prices on used have come down abit as SP have released updated versions.

I have an ACR 4 code reader, If you had been closer to me I would have let you borrow it.

I know there are a number of chappies on here who have them.

Just searched on ebay and the prices appear to be very high at the moment with few used versions available.

I bought an ACR2 off ebay for £35 several years ago and it came with a number of additional pods and cables. I had to buy the correct Rover pod and cable for the MPi. Then I later upgraded to the ACR4.

They do show up at reasonable prices on occasion. The latest SP ACR version SPi is about £1800, so maybe that has pushed up the prices of the older versions.

No code reader will do the trouble shooting for you though. The data has to be interpreted and the root cause sought out. They do let you know if you have a serious issue with a sensor though.

PS: The Rover MEMS workings are proprietary and require a bit of work to decipher and that it certainly one reason that these devices are so expensive.
