So, as I said in my presentation topic, I have a Mini IMA. Mini IMA (Industria de montagem automóvel) is a portuguese version based on CKD kits of the traveller MKII, to which was added a single rear door.

There were two different kinds of IMA: the first one, exactly the same as the Traveller, but with some MkIII features, built until 1976. The second one, built from 1976 to 1980, is the one with the single rear door.

In 1995, after coming from SA, my dad decided to buy a vehicle for my aunt. He knew a guy who was selling two Minis: a MkI Traveller and the IMA. He bought both, so that, from the two of them, e could do one.

The chosen was the IMA, because the Traveller had no documents.

The Mini went through a process of re-painting, changing its colour from red (sorry mates, I don't like red cars, neither does my dad) to turquoise.

The result:

The Mini brings me memories of my childhood: since my mom was working on shifts, and my dad was far from home, visiting us only two days each week, my aunt was the one who went to get me from school.

I am the little guy on the right, and the picture is from 1998.

During 1999, the estate starts to sleep on the street, as a Toyota Corolla (Ke20) was offered to my aunt. So, my older brother used it a year or so, and on 2000, the IMA made its last MOT, passing without any problem.

My little estate had been on stopped on the same place until 2007, when I felt sorry about her (yes, her. She's my little girl ;D ) ando so, we brought her to our home. But the expected happened, since I live really near the sea, and so does my aunt.

The project is to maintain her the most original as possible.

What do you advise me about body panels? Where should I buy them?

Looks very interesting! You'll probably have to repair that rear door, I've never seen a 1-piece upwards opening door on an estate before, very rare item I guess! And I've also never seen a 5-seater Mini!

Body panels are easily available over here, M-Machine, Moss, MiniSpares etc. The best quality ones are 'Heritage' panels.

Look forward to seeing the progress!

Dan ;D

Yes, I will probably need a new rear door. But, fortunately, there is a store in Portugal which has new ones ;)

The 5 seats are something strange, I saw many other IMA, but just two of them (mine and other I saw) have 5 seats! But, on the documents, we have the seats number, which on mine is 5, and on the others is 4... I should investigate that.

Now, the project is stopped, in order to see what we will do with the bodywork. :dozing:

That looks brilliant.

Another one of my favorite "foreign" minis on the forum! I Love the rear door on these, very cool.

Some pictures for you!:

Those on the three last pictures, were are them from?

I know that IMA's are being exported to other countries in Europe. It's good to know that we, Portuguese, did something good :)

I have more pictures of them... Do you have any topic of the Mini's 50th birthday event in Portugal in this forum?

A little extra, I love those bars! :)

With the Montego's help, we could change the Mini to another garage, were we have more conditions to do the work.

Is this different from the original Traveller/Countryman?

The rear seat area is certainly different to UK estates - the rear seat in yours looks to be a bit further forward - the flat bit where the rear seat hinges from is only about 40mm wide in mine - yours looks closer to 120mm or so. There are also metal panels to each side of the rear seat in my car which yours doesn't have.

If it isn't asking too much, does anyone with an Estate/Traveller/Countryman have a photo of the rear seat area?

I would really appreciate if someone could show me how it is on the UK versions, as I am thinking of getting anothet bodyshell for my IMA, and I actually saw one, but it has some space to store objects in each end of the seat, just like the "normal" Minis.

This is something that I never understood:I already saw IMAs like mine, with 5 seats and no space on the ends of the seat, and also some 4-seaters. :)

But I would rather like to maintain my 5 seats :ermm:

One more thing (sorry about all this questions, but I'm nothing more than a newbie): Was the "aqua" paint avaible in 1977? If it wasn't, which kind of "turquoise" related colours were avaible?

There's a Mini colour guide on here somewhere - Might help! :ermm:

I'm not sure whether it applies to exported Minis or not, but it might give you some ideas? :)

3 months and a half later, nothing happened, and here's why.

Still, I think I found a donor car, to solve bodywork problems. :D

I love the single rear door. I also like the two half doors, specially in woody travellers/countrymans. But this king of rear arrangement shows a more simple design.

And I finally confirmed: my Mini IMA is a 5-seater as standard, it isn't any kind of customization! :errr:

Is there another kind of Mini with 5 seats?
