Right, basically iI have swapped engines and originally had a starter motor with the solenoid on top of it which had the 5 wires. (positive in) 2 on plugs and 2 which bolted onto the other bolt. Pre engage like below (not mine using web pic)

Posted Image

Im now on an inertia starter, so which solenoid do i need as i see many come with 5 connectors not 4. (positive in and out, and 3 plugs) Posted Image

Which wire goes where on these? and which wire am i then missing? I believe the one thats obvious in the picture is the one i need but i cant find it in the haynes manual!

I guessed you'd know that much..! Didn't mean to patronize at all!!
But a complete newbie might read this thread later and learn from it.

I will go and get a photo in a bit if the wife will let me off building this shelving unit.. ;)

On the seperate solenoid there should be 2 spade connectors seperate from the two threaded terminals.

The bigger of those two spades connect the wire that went to the large spade on the old solenoid I think its red/white, you will have to replace the spade with a smaller female spade.

The other smaller spade connection is for the yellow/white wire this is your ballast byepass wire.

The threaded terminals one of them connect the battery cable plus all the brown wires. the other you need a cable from that to the starter motor.

On the wing mounted solenoid:-

Thick Cable to starter to the big post closest to inner wing
Battery cable and all brown wires to big post further away from inner wing (there should be a spade type terminal bolted onto this post)
White with red tracer to the terminal which is closest to the back of the car
White with yellow tracer (if fitted - this is only required for cars with ballasted ignition systems) to the terminal closest to the front of the car

JR

Edit: beaten to it!

So i got a 3 connector one, (see pic at top) the 2 threaded and one spade on the side. The big spade has to go on the side connector then?

where does the ballast bypass go onto then?

you've got the wrong solenoid then, you need the solenoid with the extra spade connection.

thought so, so with pics below im guessing on the right of the pic theres a blank bit where another connector could be... I need the one with that connector. Then big brown n red in that missing connector and yellow and white in left? or other way round?

yes you need the one with missing connection :withstupid:

easiest way tell terminals appart is the size, the smaller one is the byepass connection (white/yellow)

Heres a pic of wires again (OLD SOLENOID)

the cables I have are as followed.

2 brown
1 brown and red
1 yellow and white

It turned over (not very well) with the pre engage starter but not with this one.

Any ideas as to why?
