That last one is quite good 12h means its a 1275gt or mk3 s or a mk3 1300gt but the 298f is not mentioned which if info is available surley would tell me what car it came from. Or am I wrong?

The 12 simply means it's a 1275 - the H means it's transverse....

It's the rest of the code that does the interesting stuff.

Are you sure that's the number, looked at mine recently and had to clean up the plate quite a bit before i could read it correctly. sorry don't mean to go for the obvious but worth eliminating it first

edit: aside from that I can only suggest pm'ing guessworks on here?

298F = Lucas C40 dynamo, S type design variants, Close ratio remote control gearbox, Carburettor crankcase ventilation and twin carbs.

It is NOT a Cooper S engine, its from an MG 1300, Riley 1300 or maybe early 1300GT.

62S that is about the best suggestion yet. I couldn't find anything on 298f.
The gearbox and head are mk3 cooper s and I can only imagine that the block was damaged beyond repair and this alternative was sourced. It is now running a weber 40 instead of the twin carbs.

The later MG 1300, Riley 1300 and 1300GT used the same cylinder head as the Mk III S.
