My mates mk2 gti has the same codes on the headlights as my new halogen units, so if you get those you should have halogens

The 7" headlamps in a Mk1 or 2 Golf are not the same as those in a Mini, or any of the other hundreds of classics that use 7" headlamps. The bucket style is different and I don't think you'll get it to fit. Certainly Mk2 units won't because their bucket is square. I don't know whether the lenses are replaceable seperately from the bucket but if they are, why bother? A 7" headlamp is a 7" headlamp nomatter what car it was supposedly made for. That is kind of the whole point of them, they come from a time when headlamps were standardised.
And the buckets aren't plastic either, they're steel. Plastic buckets that actually fit into your wings are far better.

i have just bought some smoked headlights for my mini at southern mini days so they are out there, just seems like alot of grief for something you could just buy that will go straight on.
i'll find out what company i got them from and post it up. the bag is in the garage.
