i have a 1986 austin city e 1000 and i am looking to fit a mk1 grille with grille buttons.
before i went ahead with it i wanted to check if i would have any problems fitting the earlier grille in my later model mini??

Also i was wondering where is best to mount the grille buttons as my front end only has 1 bar in the grille opening. is it posible to fit the grille buttons on the end of the grile instead of the middle??

pictures of others would be a good help aswell, if possible

cheers, Rob.

Your current bonnet will have the top part of the grille attached to a lip on the front of it. The Mk1 grill doesn't have this, so you'll either need to remove it or get a new bonnet intended for Mk1 cars.

if you want to go retro id defo say get the moustach grille but id run an internal bonnet mechanism rather than grille buttons
just doesn't seem it would look right.

also will have to grind the lip of your standard bonnet to make it look mk1 style and to also allow the use of the 1 peice grille

i have already removed the lip off the bonnet and am curently looking to buy a Mk 1 moustache off of flea bay.

would it not look right as the buttons would be at the sides of the grille? or because they will ruin the retro look?

cheers for your replies!

Found a picture for you. Not sure if it helps, but this is where grille buttons generally go.

Did you want to put them like that, or further to the sides?

PS- make the effort to put the whiskers on the side as well - and get them level (I have seen some on here that slope up or down). They are awkward to put on without marking the paint, but look good when on properly.

It's better to use a van bonnet as it had no lip and the bonnet hinges in the right position, if you use a standard MK1 bonnet the hinges will be in the wrong place, just thought i'd add for reference in case anyone reads this later.
